Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen & Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen

Aslak unfortunately passed away unexpectedly in October 2021 to oral melanoma.  This freak occurrence is the first for his kennel in almost 40 years of breeding and raising PBGVs.  Oral Melanoma in dogs and in people is not thought to be genetically inherited.  We will plan to use Aslak again and are greatful we  have his semen collected.

Aslak is our crazy Swedish boy.  We decided early on that we wanted to bring in a male from Europe that would give us genetic diversity since our girls were very tightly line bred.  We struck up a conversation with Peter McCormack and Marie Mard in Sweden and two years later found ourselves flying overseas to meet our new little man.  We are so grateful to Peter and Marie for trusting us with their sweet boy.

Aslak is highly driven and extremely energetic.  Coming from a kennel that focuses as much on hunting as on showing, Aslak has a speed and gear that our other hounds do not.  He is constantly hunting and is very successful at it.  We stopped counting his squirrel kills at around 30 and he has also taken on possums, raccoons, rats and mice.  Luckily, he has been afraid of snakes!  We tried him out on the hunt fields last year and he quickly passed his Hunt Instinct Test and a first leg towards his Junior Hunter title.  At 8 1/2 years old he is finally starting to slow down enough to spend a little time inside with us.  He is a sweet, loving boy who enjoys being around his people but is also frequently patrolling the fence line and will sleep outside when it gets really cold.  We have a doggie door and he will creep out and sleep on a bed on the back patio if it's around the freezing mark.  I assume it's him going back to his Swedish roots.

Aslak has left his mark on our breeding program and tends to throw bone, harsh coat, lots of color and a beautiful head.  He does not always throw his size.  Aslak is intact and happy to make babies with the right girl but is also collected and frozen. Although he is 10 1/2 years old, he is still viable with good motility, count and 75% normal morphology.  Last collected in May 2021.

Aslak's titles include Champion, Grand Champion, Junior Hunter and Senior Hunter.
